Beacon Update: Wednesday, August 30th

Dear Friends:

We are grateful for all the outreach and want to keep everyone updated on The Beacon and our work to serve Houston’s homeless.  As we do so, we are also mindful that many people across the region are struggling and we continue to keep them in our thoughts as well.  We hope this message finds you safe and dry.

At this time, the John S. Dunn Outreach Center is still without power.  The Beacon and other agencies in the building have suspended services until power can be restored.  We are hopeful that this will be soon and will keep you posted on a daily basis.

Immediate Needs:

- Certified Security Officers – armed or unarmed.  Our Beacon security officer experienced flooding in his home and our off-duty security team has been re-deployed to be first responders across the city.  If you know of any individuals that can work as certified security officers or if have a contact with a security company that has individuals available to work, please contact our COO, Mike Puccio at

- Donations of healthy non-perishable snacks such as granola bars or nuts.

When power is restored, we will begin working with our building partners to provide limited services.  Having snacks on hand for clients will help us meet this essential need right away.

What’s next?

We will keep you updated on the status of power in the building.  Once power is restored, we will open The Beacon Day Center and coordinate our services to a limited extent with the Cathedral Clinic on site.  In the coming days after power is restored, we intend to resume full capacity.

When power is restored, we will need volunteers to help with:

  • Laundry, showers and food service: again, on a limited basis to start with until we are able to get back to full capacity

  • Sorting and distributing donations: we anticipate that we will start to receive donations of clothing, toiletry items and food.  We will need help sorting and organizing these items for distribution to our clients.

Please make contact with our Volunteer Coordinator, Ron Marshall at if you intend to volunteer with us so that we can coordinate schedules.

Thanks to all who have contacted us about helping The Beacon and those that we serve.  We appreciate the outpouring of support and will keep everyone informed as we move forward.

In service,

Becky Landes
